    What is the Image Converter?

    An image converter changes a picture from one file format to another — PNG to JPG to shrink a screenshot for email, JPG to PNG for editing without further loss, WebP to JPG for an app or website that will not accept WebP, or JPG to WebP to make a web page load faster. Choose JPG, PNG or WebP, drop in your images, and each one is converted straight away, keeping its original name with the new extension.

    The conversion runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded. Besides JPG, PNG and WebP, the converter reads GIF (the first frame), BMP and SVG in every modern browser, AVIF in recent ones, and HEIC iPhone photos in browsers that can open them, such as Safari. When converting to JPG, which has no transparency, you choose the colour that fills transparent areas.

    How to use it

    1. Pick the format to convert to: JPG, PNG or WebP.

    3. For JPG and WebP, adjust the quality; for JPG, pick a background colour for transparent areas.
    4. Optionally reduce the size to 75%, 50% or 25% of the original.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my images uploaded anywhere?
    No. The images are decoded and re-encoded by your own browser, on your device. The page makes no network request with your files.
    Which format should I choose?
    JPG is the most widely accepted format for photos. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, which suits logos, screenshots and graphics with sharp edges, but photos saved as PNG are large. WebP is usually the smallest for both photos and graphics, keeps transparency and is supported by all current browsers, though some older software and upload forms still reject it.
    Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?
    Only in a browser that can decode HEIC, which today mainly means Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad. Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows and Android cannot read HEIC, and the tool will say so. On an iPhone you can also set Settings → Camera → Formats to “Most Compatible” so new photos are taken as JPG.
    What happens to transparent backgrounds when I convert PNG to JPG?
    JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you pick — white by default. Converting to PNG or WebP keeps the transparency.
    Does converting an animated GIF keep the animation?
    No. JPG and PNG are still images, so the first frame of the GIF is converted.
    Does converting reduce image quality?
    Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG or WebP compresses the image; at the default quality of 92 the difference is very hard to see. Converting a JPG to PNG cannot bring back detail that JPG compression already removed. EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location is not carried over.
