What is the Income Tax Calculator?

An income tax calculator shows how much tax you will pay for the year and, just as importantly, which regime to choose. Enter your salary and any other income, add the deductions you claim, and it works out your tax under both the old and the new regime for FY 2026-27 side by side — with the standard deduction, the Section 87A rebate, surcharge and 4% health and education cess — and tells you which one saves more.

The new regime is the default and has lower rates, a ₹75,000 standard deduction and no tax at all on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. The old regime has higher rates but lets you claim 80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest and NPS. Which is better depends on how much you actually claim, and the comparison makes that obvious. Your figures are calculated in your browser and never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Enter your gross annual salary and any other income, such as interest.
  2. Choose your age group — senior citizens have a higher exemption in the old regime.
  3. Fill in the deductions you claim: 80C, 80D, NPS, HRA exemption, home loan interest.
  4. Compare the old and new regime columns; the saving with the better one is shown at the top.
  5. Use the monthly tax figure to check the TDS on your payslip.

Frequently asked questions

What are the income tax slabs for FY 2026-27?
Budget 2026 kept the slabs unchanged. New regime: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4–8 lakh, 10% from ₹8–12 lakh, 15% from ₹12–16 lakh, 20% from ₹16–20 lakh, 25% from ₹20–24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Old regime: nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh for seniors, ₹5 lakh for those 80 and above), 5% up to ₹5 lakh, 20% up to ₹10 lakh and 30% above. A 4% cess is added in both.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?
Under the new regime, yes: the Section 87A rebate cancels the tax when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. For salaried people the ₹75,000 standard deduction comes off first, so a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above the limit, marginal relief means you never pay more tax than the income you earned above ₹12 lakh.
Which regime should I choose?
Whichever gives the lower total in the comparison. As a rough guide, the old regime only wins when your deductions are large — typically a full 80C, a home loan and a sizeable HRA exemption together. For most people with only 80C, the new regime is cheaper.
What does this calculator not cover?
It is an estimate for resident individuals, with all income taxed at slab rates. Capital gains, which have their own special rates, lottery winnings, agricultural income and the rules for HUFs and non-residents are not included.
